Living with Ankylosing Spondylitis

Helping Others to Understand My AS

Living with AS often means helping others understand a condition they can’t always see. Education and open communication are key.

It may seem daunting to talk about your diagnosis with others, but there are plenty of ways to approach this, including using the support of online resources and leaflets. The main elements to cover include:

  • Explain symptoms like fatigue, stiffness, and pain, even if they're not visible
  • Be honest about limitations without feeling the need to justify them
  • Encourage empathy, not pity—people often need guidance on how to support you

The more those around you understand AS, the more empowered and supported you’ll feel daily.
