Living with Ankylosing Spondylitis

Work and Study

AS doesn’t have to hold you back in your career or studies. The key to coping in these environments is ensuring the appropriate people are aware of your condition and know how to help.

AS has a substantial and long-term impact on daily activity, which means you are protected by the Equality Act 2010 and employers must make reasonable adjustments.1

If you feel comfortable, then sharing your diagnosis is the first step. You can do this by conversing with your senior or providing them with a medical note and resources such as the NASS Guide for Employers.

If you are unsure of the changes that could help you in the workplace/school, you can discuss this with your doctor, physiotherapist, or consult online resources, such as:

  • NASS Guide to Managing Your axial SpA at Work
NASS provide a clear and extensive guide which considers all the situations you may face with AS in professional settings
  • ACAS, Access to Work support
ACAS explains your rights as an employee and the reasonable adjustments you can request at work
